Backyard Bioremediation Project

We work with homeowners to develop bioswales using mushrooms and native plants to filter water and reduce flooding, following the county's Low Impact Development (LID) guidelines as best practice. By the end of 2026, we'll have 2-3 working demonstration sites. Long-term, this becomes a replicable model for affordable, community-led stormwater solutions across Florida. We want to remind people that we have the ability to grow our own solutions, right in our backyards. Reach out to us if you are interested in making your own.

Rewilding Support with Fungal Allies

Working with partner organizations we plan to bolster rewilding intiatives with fungal allies. This looks like inoculating plants with mycorhizzal species, taking soil samples to understand the biology at the microscope level, as well as cultivating visible mushrooms for people to enjoy. Urban and disturbed soils in Sarasota County typically lack the mycorrhizal fungal networks that native plants evolved to depend on for water, nutrient exchange, and drought resilience. To our knowledge, no other organization in the region offers community-scale fungal cultivation paired with quantitative soil biology assessment so we want to fill a much needed gap.

Solarpunk Book Club

Since June 2025 and meeting regularly at the library, the book club consists of artists, activists, teachers and environmentalists who gather to dream of a better world. Metamimicry acts as a nonprofit vehicle for turning inspiration into action. Book club members are beginning to put together a zine to illustrate what Solarpunk means to us and what a future Sarasota that we want to live in will look like.

We are a community-driven platform connecting grassroots bioremediation projects and practitioners worldwide. Our mission is to support communities disproportionately impacted by environmental harm while centering Indigenous knowledge and decolonizing approaches to land healing.

Projects in our network demonstrate tangible environmental benefits while respecting cultural knowledge and avoiding greenwashing. We believe in collective knowledge sharing, multiple ways of knowing, and healing both land and communities.

Who We Serve

Community organizations, Indigenous-led projects, grassroots environmental groups, researchers, and anyone working to restore contaminated land through biological processes. We welcome projects of all scales that center community benefit over profit.

SPoRE: Salish Place of Remediation Education

The Salish Place of Remediation Education, or SPoRE, is a community mushroom cultivation project in partnership between the Squaxin Island Tribe and Metamimicry. The SPoRE, located at and functioning as a part of the Salish Roots Farm, is helping to bring greater access to mushrooms to the Squaxin Island Tribe and broader community.

At the SPoRE, people learn sustainable cultivation and experimental techniques, contribute to research projects, make medicine and recipes, grow remediator species, and grow fungi from culturally relevant, foraged finds. As a shared space, people are able to access resources, including equipment and books, for their own personal projects, increasing access to fungi for all.

Potter Valley Tribe Mushroom Program

Located on the Noyo-bida Ranch in Fort Bragg, the program began as a graduate project aimed at agricultural education, food sovereignty, and waste diversion. Growing mushrooms utilizes circular economy practices, literally turning waste into food.

The mushroom grow room has encouraged efforts into recovering traditional mycological knowledge, an often overlooked aspect of cultural know-how. In February of 2022, we completed a community mushroom lab that is currently open for community use.

Bioretention of Stormwater

Washington state is currently home to fourteen salmon and steelhead populations listed as threatened or endangered. Urban runoff mortality syndrome (URMS) affects Coho salmon that come into contact with urban stormwater. A tire chemical transformation product, 6PPD-quinone, was recently identified as the predominant toxin contributing to this phenomenon.

We are studying the efficacy of using fungal inoculants in bioretention cells for reducing loadings of 6PPD-quinone into streams from stormwater, working with multiple fungal species to determine which are most effective at breaking down this toxic chemical.
